Flames Win Fourth Straight with 6-0 Victory Over Knights
With their fourth consecutive victory, Liberty runs its overall mark to 8-5 on the season, while Southern Virginia drops to 1-11-3. It is the first time since 2002 the Flames have won four-straight matches.
Controlling play from the start, Liberty began a four-goal outburst over a nine-minute span in the contest's 15th minute. Forward Toby Lewis (Jr., Morrison, Colo.) corralled a loose ball in the center of the box and fired a pass to an attacking Dupere (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) at the left side of the box. The midfielder connected with the pass in stride, putting it in the far right-handed corner of the net for his first goal of his collegiate career and a 1-0 Flames' lead.
Less than two minutes later, fellow freshman Guzman (Charlotte, N.C.) netted his first collegiate goal. The midfielder pounced on a clearing pass and sent a one-timer past Knight goalkeeper Dustin Jensen from 25 yards out to make it 2-0 Liberty.
Keeping the pressure on, the two freshmen connected for the Flames' third tally of the night 1:21 later. Guzman sent a shot in on Jensen, who batted it out, but Dupere scooped up the rebound and scored his second goal of the night.
Guzman capped off the offensive outburst with his second marker of the contest in the 24th minute. This time, Adrian Bumbut (Sr., F, Zalau, Romania) hit the midfielder in stride with a pass from the right side of the field, catching the keeper out of position. Guzman blasted home the pass into an open net to give the Flames a 4-0 advantage.
In the second half, Liberty continued its offensive attack, adding two more goals. In the 59th minute, Brandon Patterson (Jr., MF, Lakeland, Fla.) lofted a crossing pass across the goal mouth which Lewis headed into the lower left-hand corner of the net for the Flames' fifth goal. The tally was the fourth of the season for Lewis.
Justin Willoughby (Jr., F, Greenville, S.C.) added the last goal of the night in the 66th minute of play. Cameron Chastain (So., F, Upton, Md.) sent a shot on goal which was batted down by the Knight keeper. Off a scramble for the loose ball by several players from both teams, Willoughby controlled the ball and with the netminder out of position, scored his first goal of the season.
Liberty continued its recent strong defensive play as it did not allow Southern Virginia a shot in the contest. For the second consecutive match, the Flames did not allow a goal and the shutout is their third in four matches.
For the night, Liberty outshot Southern Virginia, 36-0 and held a 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.
Kevin Mahan (Sr., Waterford, Mich.) started the game in net for the Flames and played the first 58 minutes. Michael Masmar (So., Oakdale, Minn.) took over and finished the game in the Liberty net. Jensen made 14 saves on the evening in the Knight's net.
Liberty finishes its regular season slate on Saturday night by hosting the Campbell Camels in a non-conference contest. Before the match, the four seniors playing in their last game at Liberty Soccer Field will honored. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
