Thomas Named Big South Defensive Player of Week
Liberty junior middle blocker Loren Thomas has been named Big South Defensive Player of the Week, for matches played Sept. 19-25. Thomas played a major role in Liberty's record-setting 20.5-block performance during a conference-opening 3-2 win, Friday at Radford.
The Ocoee, Fla., native, claims her first Big South weekly award of the season, and third of her career. She was tabbed Big South Freshman of the Week twice during the 2009 campaign.
Thomas entered the top 10 on Liberty's career blocks list with a five-block outing, Tuesday at James Madison. She is currently 10th all-time at Liberty with 257 career blocks. She averaged 1.89 blocks per set during this past week, boosting her season average to 1.18 blocks per set.
The junior middle blocker set a program rally-scoring record with 12 block assists Friday at Radford, besting the previous mark of 11, set by Erin McKeown Oct. 11, 2003 and tied by Chelaine McCarty Nov. 1, 2008. She helped the Lady Flames post the first 20-block match by a Big South team since 2004, and Liberty held Radford to a .078 attack percentage.
On Friday, she added 11 kills, giving her the first kills-blocks double-double by a Lady Flame since McCarty did so Nov. 1, 2008 at Gardner-Webb
Liberty (6-9, 1-0 Big South) will host a pair of conference matches this weekend, starting Friday as UNC Asheville (7-6, 1-0) visits the Vines Center at 7 p.m. The Lady Flames will then meet Gardner-Webb (4-10, 0-1) Saturday at 2 p.m.
