The 2011 Liberty men's and women's cross country teams conducted their first full team practice Monday afternoon at the Campus East intramural fields.

The Flames and Lady Flames are each reigning Big South champions, but both squads were hit hard by graduation after the 2010 season. Big South top-four finishers Sam Chelanga, Evans Kigen, Josh Edmonds, Dacia Bushman and Hailey Neal all wrapped up their collegiate careers a year ago.

Josh MacDonald and David Ricksecker are top returnees on the men's team, while defending Big South individual champion Jennifer Klugh and Khristina Kanagy will anchor the 2011 women's squad.

Head coach Brant Tolsma welcomes back two of Liberty's top alumni as part of his 2011 cross country coaching staff. Josh McDougal will serve as assistant coach and Rebekah Ricksecker is working as a volunteer assistant.

Liberty will open its 2011 campaign on Sept. 2, when the Flames and Lady Flames compete in the Virginia Tech Alumni Invitational. The women's 4K race will begin at 6 p.m., followed by the men's 6K at 6:45.
