Liberty Field Hockey Begins Preseason
|Head Coach Jodi Murphy prepares to lead the Lady Flames into their inaugural season this fall.|
With its first group of student-athletes now on Liberty Mountain, the inaugural season of Liberty field hockey is officially underway. The Flames Sports Network's Nick Pierce had a chance to catch up with junior goalkeeper and Richmond transfer Ann Jefferis as well as head coach Jodi Murphy on the first day of reporting.
Entering her first season as a collegiate head coach, Murphy addressed the squad at 8 a.m. Monday morning. The team then had meetings throughout the day and prepared for its 3 p.m. departure for Virginia Beach, Va. For the next five days, the team will practice at the Sportsplex National Training Center, while installation of the Lady Flames new home turf is completed on Liberty's Campus East.
Jefferis, who has two years of NCAA Division I field hockey experience, will be looked upon for leadership of the inaugural Lady Flames squad. The roster, which features student-athletes with varied experience, also includes a pair from the 2011 Liberty lacrosse team—Emily Dinsmore and Jordan Richardson—and a strong class of incoming freshmen.
While in Virginia Beach, the team will go through numerous preseason drills and tests, while also focusing on team building.
The Lady Flames' 2011 season begins on Sept. 3, when Commonwealth opponent Radford visits Lynchburg for a noon start.
