Karlsson Tied for Lead at Nordea Masters
Nordea Masters Leaderboard
Interview with Robert Karlsson following the first round
Competing as one of six amateurs in the field, Liberty's Robert Karlsson finds himself in a three-way tie for the lead at the 2011 Nordea Masters, this week's stop on the European Tour.
Karlsson, who is a rising senior at Liberty, carded seven birdies and a double bogey to post an opening round five-under par 65 on Thursday. The event is being contested at the Bro Hof Slott Golf Course in Stockholm, Sweden, in Karlsson's native country.
Karlsson is tied atop the leaderboard with fellow Swede Alexander Noren and Jaco Van Zyl of South Africa. The trio leads a total of 29 golfers who found red figures during the opening day at the par-72, 7,607-yard trek.
Karlsson quickly went under par, birdieing the par-4, No. 3 hole. Three holes later, Karlsson started a string of third-straight birdies to help him make the turn at four-under par.
Birdies at the par-4, No. 10 hole and the par-5, No. 13 hole got Karlsson to six-under par. The two-time Big South Golfer of the Year found his first trouble of the day with a double-bogey five on the par-3, No. 17 hole, but rebounded with his seventh birdie of the afternoon on the closing No. 18 hole, a lengthy, 472-yard par-4.
This marks the second time Karlsson has competed in a European Tour event. In 2009, he missed the cut at the SAS Masters, after carding a four-over 150 (77-73) during the opening two rounds of the event played at the Barseback Golf and Country Club in Malmo, Sweden.
Karlsson is slated to tee off No. 1 tee, a straightaway par-5, 607-yard hole, at 8:50 a.m. local time tomorrow for his second round. He will be playing alongside Floris De Vries of the Netherlands and Felipe Aguilar of Chile.
