Swimming Recruiting Class Recognized
CollegeSwimming.com Ranking the Classes
The Liberty swimming program has received national recognition by CollegeSwimming.com for its incoming freshmen class. The Lady Flames, entering their second year of NCAA Division I competition, earned mention in a "Ranking the Classes" feature on the website, released Tuesday.
The website ranks the top 25 recruiting classes among NCAA Division I swimming programs, with California leading the rankings. Liberty appears in the "Others of Note" section for deepening its talent pool with a big class. The Lady Flames are joined on that list by Pittsburgh, TCU, Iowa, North Texas and Pennsylvania. CCSA member Florida Gulf Coast was listed as No. 24 on the top-25 list.
Head coach Jake Shellenberger said, "We are extremely thrilled to be recognized by CollegeSwimming.com for this year's recruiting efforts and honored to be in the company of the other schools mentioned. (Assistant Coach) Jessica (Barnes) did a fantastic job putting this class together and did so despite this following our first ever year of competition. The commitment from the university to building a top-25 athletics department made this class possible and we are excited for the future of this program."
Liberty's incoming freshmen class includes: Meghan Babcock (Winston-Salem, N.C.), Marley Cripe (Noblesville, Ind.), Erin Curry (Linwood, N.J.), Emily Duff (Clayton, N.C.), Cori Gary (San Antonio, Texas), Jenny Garzinski (Springboro, Ohio), Margaret Riel (Alpharetta, Ga.) and Chloe Thomas (Souderton, Pa.) will join the Liberty swimming program in the fall.
The list of newcomers features several all-state swimmers and record holders. These eight student-athletes will bolster a team that finished sixth at the 2011 CCSA Championships during its first year as a varsity program.
