Murphy Releases Inaugural Liberty Field Hockey Schedule
Head coach Jodi Murphy has announced the schedule for Liberty field hockey's inaugural season in 2011. As the Lady Flames open program history competing as an independent, the team will face a variety of opponents, including seven fellow NCAA Division I programs.
"I am pleased to announce the schedule for our inaugural season. Competing as an independent this year gives us an opportunity to play a wide array of teams from each of the NCAA divisions. My prayer is to use this season as opportunity to lay the foundation for seasons to come where we will have conference affiliation and be competing for championships. While we have only a few home games this season, I am excited about the close proximity of many of our away competition sites," commented Murphy.
History will be made on September 3, with the program debuting in a home contest against Commonwealth opponent Radford, who competes in the NorPac Conference. The match is slated to begin at noon and will take place at the new multi-sport complex being constructed on Liberty's Campus East.
On the following weekend, September 10 and 11, the Lady Flames travel to Fredericksburg, Va., to compete in a tournament at Mary Washington. Liberty will face Division III programs Marywood and Christopher Newport on back-to-back days.
Murphy's squad then travels to Moon Township, Pa., for their first out-of-state competition, with games once again coming on back-to-back days. While competing at Robert Morris, Liberty will match up against Lindenwood on Sept. 17, then face the homestanding Colonials on Sept. 18.
Next, the Lady Flames will wrap up September with three more road games, facing Eastern Mennonite (Sept. 22) in Harrisonburg, Va., Longwood (Sept. 24) in Farmville, Va., and Limestone (Sept. 30) in Gaffney, S.C.
To open the month of October, Liberty will play its final home contest of the season, hosting Roanoke on Oct. 5.
Later that week, on Oct. 8, the team will make the trip over the mountains to Lexington, Va., as they will square off with Washington & Lee.
The next four contests on the slate will take the team from North Carolina to Connecticut.
Separated by one week, the Lady Flames square off against NorPac members Davidson (Oct. 16) and Appalachian State (Oct. 23) at their respective home fields in the Tar Heel State.
On Oct. 28, Liberty will take part in a Play for the Cure game with Temple at the Owls' home turf in Philadelphia. The game, as done with other sports, will raise awareness for breast cancer and benefit the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Two days later, on Oct. 30, the Lady Flames close out the month by facing America East program Fairfield, in Fairfield, Conn.
On the weekend of Nov. 5 and 6, the program will close out its inaugural season with back-to-back neutral-site games at Christopher Newport in Newport News, Va. On Nov. 5, the Lady Flames meet with Houghton, before closing out the year against Lindenwood, which will be the second meeting on the year with the school, on Nov. 6.
