Chelanga's 10K Postponed to Friday at 5 p.m.
Due to a series of heavy thunderstorms which hit Des Moines late Thursday evening, Sam Chelanga's men's 10K final at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships has been postponed until Friday at 5 p.m. Eastern.
The third and final heat of the women's 4 x 400 relay was about to begin at 9:15 p.m. Eastern Thursday, when lightning was spotted near Drake Stadium. After an approximately two-hour weather delay, a decision was made to move the rest of Thursday's events to Friday.
When the men's 10K begins, Chelanga will be challenged in his attempt to defend his NCAA national championship from a year ago. The race will mark the first time in NCAA history that three sub-27:30 runners (Chelanga, Arizona's Stephen Sambu and Iona's Leonard Korir) will compete in the same 10K race.
At this point, Friday and Saturday's regularly scheduled events remain unchanged. So, Chelanga is still slated to run in the 5K Saturday at 2:21 p.m. Eastern, less than 24 hours after the completion of the 10K final.
