Blue Shuts Out Red in Opener of Annual Red-Blue Series

Dane Beakler pitched five shutout innings Monday.

The Blue team jumped to the lead and never looked back in an 8-0 shutout of the Red team in the opening game of the annual Red vs. Blue series, Monday afternoon at Worthington Stadium.

Of the Blue team's eight runs, four were earned in the victory.  The Blue team broke open a scoreless contest in the fourth with two runs and then rode strong pitching performances from sophomores Dustin Umberger and Dane Beakler en route to the victory. 

Umberger pitched four shutout innings to pick up the win, while Beakler pitched the last five innings to pick up the save.  Umberger surrendered only one hit and no walks in his four innings of work.  Beakler also did not yield any walks and gave up only two hits. 

The duo did not allow a runner from the Blue team to pass second base on the afternoon. 

Centerfielder Garrett Young had three hits in the contest to lead the Blue, while redshirt sophomore Cody Brown made several strong plays at shortstop.

The series will continue Wednesday afternoon at Worthington Stadium and will conclued with the final game of the series on Friday afternoon.
