Liberty redshirt senior distance runner Sam Chelanga is part of the final men's watch list for the 2011 awarding of The Bowerman, as announced by The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee, in conjunction with the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Chelanga will wrap up his collegiate track & field career at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships after two impressive races at last weekend's NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round meet in Bloomington, Ind.

Chelanga won the men's 10K in Bloomington on May 26 in a time of 29:00.94. That enabled him to cross the line eight seconds ahead of runner-up Shadrack Kipchirchir of Western Kentucky.

Two nights later, the men's 5K race was much more competitive. However, Chelanga sprinted the final lap in under 56 seconds to post the fastest time among the event's two sections, a 14:06.16.

Chelanga is one of six men's runners who qualified to run both the 5K and 10K races at the 2011 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be contested June 8-11 at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa.

Chelanga will attempt to defend his NCAA national title in the 10K on June 9 at 9:50 p.m. Eastern. He will then come back June 11 at 2:21 p.m. Eastern to run the 5K in Des Moines. The 5K will be aired live on CBS.

About The Bowerman
The Bowerman, which debuted in 2009, is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate track & field athletes in the nation. Oregon's Ashton Eaton and Virginia Tech's Queen Harrison are the reigning winners of The Bowerman, which is named for legendary Oregon track & field/cross country coach Bill Bowerman.

The Bowerman Advisory Board appointed four of its members to comprise The Bowerman Men's Watch Committee and another four of its members to make up The Bowerman Women's Watch Committee. The committee will name the 10 men's semifinalists on June 20 and the three finalists will be tabbed on July 13.
