Karlsson Named to GCAA PING All-Region Team
GCAA Division I PING All-Region Team
For the second year in a row, Liberty's Robert Karlsson has been named to the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Division I PING All-Region team.
Karlsson just recently completed the best individual season in program history, as the junior became the first golfer to post a season stroke average below 72 (71.27). This marks the second year in a row Karlsson has set a new program standard for season stroke average, after finishing his sophomore season with a 72.37 stroke average.
Karlsson repeated as the Big South Golfer of the Year after leading the Big South all season in stroke average. The Kalmar, Sweden, native was named Big South Golfer of the Week four times this past season.
Karlsson finished top five in seven out of 12 events this year, including a tie for first place at the Rio Pinar Invitational, where he posted a season-best 12-under par 204.
Karlsson is the first golfer in Big South Conference history to be named to the GCAA Division I PING All-Region team twice during a collegiate career. The junior is the second player in program history to be honored by the organization, as Nathan Schenz-Davis was named to the All-Region team in 2008.
Karlsson, who is currently ranked No. 50 in the latest Golfweek individual rankings, helped the Flames capture their first-ever Big South Championship in April and advance to the NCAA Arizona Regional two weeks ago.
Karlsson is currently preparing for the Palmer Cup, a collegiate Ryder Cup style event to be played at The Stanwich Club in Greenwich, Conn., June 9-11.
The event pits two teams of the top collegiate golfers in the country against each other, with the United States leading the overall series, 7-6-1, dating back to the event's inaugural tournament in 1997. Karlsson will be one of the eight members on the European squad.
