Galeone Helps Liberty to 8th-Place Finish

Elliot Galeone placed fifth in the IC4A javelin final on Sunday.

Elliot Galeone was Liberty's top individual finisher Sunday at the IC4A/ECAC Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, placing fifth in the IC4A javelin. His effort helped the Liberty men's squad take eighth place in the final IC4A team standings.

The Flames totaled 28 points for their eighth-place finish, in a field of 52 men's teams which scored at least one point. Duke racked up 74.5 points for its first-ever IC4A title, outdistancing runner-up George Mason by 13.5 tallies.

On the women's side, Liberty ended up with 10 points. The Lady Flames finished in a tie for 29th place in the final ECAC standings with Boston College, Delaware, Delaware State and Iona. Duke completed its IC4A/ECAC championship sweep with 73.75 points. Connecticut, which had captured the last three ECAC titles, came in second with 65 points.

Galeone reached 218-6 on his sixth and final javelin attempt, securing his third straight top-five finish at the IC4A meet. The redshirt senior previously placed fifth in 2009 and third a year ago.

Isaac Wendland also scored points for the Flames on Sunday, after making a strong charge up to sixth place on the final lap of the 1,500 final. His official time was 3:47.14, which was just .02 seconds off of his personal-best clocking.

Anthony Bryant was Liberty's best triple jumper on the day, coming in 11th after jumping 47-7.75 on his third attempt.

Ryan Smith came in 17th in the shot put final, with the Big South champion's top effort landing at 51-0.

ECAC Day Three Recap
Jennifer Klugh was the only Lady Flame to compete on Sunday. The junior clocked a 4:30.27 in the 1,500 final, enabling her to finish ninth. It was a one-place improvement from the 2010 ECAC 1,500 final, which saw Klugh place 10th.

A number of Liberty athletes will continue their seasons at the NCAA East Preliminary Round meet, slated for May 26-28 in Bloomington, Ind. The official list of qualifiers will be announced on Thursday.
