No. 4 Davidson Defeats No. 5 Liberty, 11-6

Junior captain Kristin Crowley posted two goals in Liberty's 2011 NLC Tournament first round matchup against Davidson.

Playing in Game 2 of the 2011 National Lacrosse Conference Tournament, the No. 5 seed Liberty Lady Flames looked to upset No. 4 seed Davidson on the Wildcats home field, Friday afternoon. However, the tournament host prevented the Lady Flames from leaving Richardson Stadium with the win, taking the contest 11-6.

With the loss, Liberty falls to 6-11 on the season, while Davidson improves to 6-11 overall.

Ann Fucigna and Erin Keitel led Davidson with two goals, apiece. Junior captain Kristin Crowley and freshman Jen Moyer highlighted Liberty's scoring with two goals each, while leading scorer Karis Walborn and Emily Dinsmore each chipped in one. Dinsmore also paced Liberty with five groundballs and two caused turnovers.

Wildcats leading scorer Fucigna put the host on the board with an unassisted goal in the opening minute. Moyer answered for the Lady Flames 29 ticks later, sinking a free position shot to knot the contest, 1-1.

Davidson fired back with a trio of goals over a near-14 minute span. Alanna Parker, Paige Logan and Erin Doherty penetrated the Liberty net during the burst. Doherty's unassisted marker at 14:46 put the home team up three, 4-1.

Liberty tied the contest with three goals of its own in eight and a half minutes. Moyer posted her second unassisted tally of the contest at the 12:27 mark. Crowley and Walborn followed up Moyer's marker with back-to-back free position goals to knot contest, 4-4, with 6:17 remaining in the period. Walborn's tally was her team-leading 34th of the year.

After five minutes of scoreless action, Fucigna closed out the stanza for the Wildcats with an unassisted goal at 1:13, ultimately leading to a halftime score of 5-4.

Neither team found the net in the opening five minutes of the second period. Keitel increased Davidson's lead to two, maneuvering around the Liberty defense and placing a shot past goalkeeper Kristen Masullo. Crowley answered for Liberty nearly 2:30 later, posting her 30th goal of the season with an unassisted tally at 22:09 to pull the Lady Flames within one, 6-5.

Davidson increased its lead back to three with two-straight markers. Dinsmore capped off Liberty's scoring on the day with 10:18 remaining, capitalizing on a free position shot to cut the deficit to two, 8-6.

The Wildcats then closed out the contest, reeling off three-consecutive tallies en route to the 11-6 final.

Jessica Melby played the entire game in the net for Davidson, making four saves. Masullo remained in between the pipes for the Lady Flames the full 60 minutes, finishing with 13 saves.

The Wildcats advance to the semifinals of the tournament on Saturday, where they will face No. 1 seed Jacksonville at 11:30 a.m.

Prior to the matchup, Liberty returns to Richardson Field tomorrow for a consolation game, taking on No. 8 seed Howard at 9 a.m. Earlier this year, Liberty defeated Howard, 19-9, at home on March 27.
