Flames Fall in Regular-Season Finale
The Liberty men's tennis team completed its regular season, Friday afternoon, as the Flames fell to host UNC Asheville, 5-2. Despite taking two singles matches to a deciding third set, the Flames weren't able to complete a comeback on the road.
The Flames complete the regular season with a 9-11 record while being 1-5 in Big South matches. UNC Asheville completes the regular season with a 9-9 overall mark, and a 2-3 record in conference play.
Opening with doubles, the Flames dropped two close contests, 8-5, in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches. Tristan Stayt and Mandeep Yadev posted the lone Liberty doubles win, scoring a 9-7 victory over Thomas Rees and Adrien Langeard at No. 3.
Turning to singles looking for a come-from-behind victory, the Flames notched two wins, but were denied by the Bulldogs in a pair of three-set matches.
Siim Tuus registered his 11th singles win of the season with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Matt Waissen in the No. 1 contest. Giancarlo Lemmi also made quick work of his opponent, defeating Ryan Matthews, 6-0, 6-1, while playing the No. 4 spot in Liberty's lineup. The win was his 12th of the season.
With straight-set defeats in the No. 3 and No. 6 matches, Stayt and Yadev gave the Flames a chance by taking their respective matches into a third frame. However, Nicola Nonnenbroich defeated Stayt, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the No. 2 contest, while Jonas Brobeck edged Yadev, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5.
The Flames now wait until Sunday to hear their opening matchup for the 2011 Big South Men's Tennis Championships, which will be played in Rock Hill, S.C. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 21 and concludes with the championship match on Saturday, April 23.
