Flames Top Seed for Big South Championship
The best season in program history has earned the Flames the No. 1 seed for next week's Big South Men's Golf Championship, as the seeding for the third-day event was announced today by the league office.
The 54-hole event is being hosted by Radford at The Patriot Golf Club at Grand Harbor in Ninety Six, S.C. This is the sixth time in the last seven years The Patriot Golf Club has hosted the Big South Men's Golf Championship event (2005, 2006, 2008, 2009 and 2010).
Seedings for the annual event are determined each year by using the Golfweek national rankings, which has the Flames listed at No. 32 this week. The Flames have ranked inside the Top 40 most of the spring season and as high as No. 31 two weeks ago.
Coastal Carolina, who has had a stranglehold on the league having won seven-straight Big South titles, is the No. 2 seed with a No. 59 national ranking. Tournament host Radford is the No. 3 seed with a No. 119 national ranking.
Rounding out the rest of the eight-team field are: No. 4 seed Gardner-Webb (ranked No. 145), No. 5 seed Charleston Southern (ranked No. 158), No. 6 seed Winthrop (ranked No. 161) and No. 7 seed High Point (ranked No. 193). Presbyterian College, who is ranked No. 181, will be participating on an invitation only basis, as the Blue Hose are not eligible for the conference championship until 2013.
Last year, the Flames finished third at the Big South Men's Golf Championship, as the Flames fired a nine-over par 873 (304-288-281). Robert Karlsson captured individual medalist honors. The Swedish golfer carded a seven-under par 209 that was aided by a closing-round 66 on the par-72, 7,079-yard course.
A practice round will be held on Sunday, followed by 18 holes of competition each of the following days, starting at 8 a.m.
The Flames are slated to take to the first tee on Monday morning at 9:40 a.m., along with No. 2 seed Coastal Carolina and No. 3 seed Radford.
There is no admission charge to the event and the Big South Conference will be providing "Live Scoring" throughout each of the competition.
Following the practice round on Sunday, the Big South Conference will hold its annual Men's Golf Awards Banquet. During the 6:30 p.m., event, the league will host the first half of its all-conference team (based upon regular-season performances), plus the 2011 Golfer of the Year, Rookie of the Year and Coach of the Year. The second half of the all-conference team will be announced following the conclusion of the championship event.
Last year, Liberty swept all three of the league's major awards. Karlsson was named Golfer of the Year, while Max McKay was named Rookie of the Year and Jeff Thomas was tabbed Coach of the Year.
