Sammi Shivock hit a three-run homer as the Lady Flames dropped a 7-4 contest to Winthrop.

A six-run third frame for the Eagles was too much for Liberty to match, as Winthrop walked away with a 7-4 win, Saturday afternoon, in game two of a Big South doubleheader.

The Lady Flames took game one, 13-6, earlier in the day, and the final game of the series will be played tomorrow.

Winthrop improves to 9-21 overall and 1-3 in conference play, while the Lady Flames drop to 11-14 overall and 2-2 in the Big South.

Kelly Strickland recorded the first hit of the game in the top of the second with a single up the middle. She moved to second on a sac bunt by Meredith Crisante, then advanced to third when Kaylee West grounded out. She remaineded stranded when Sammi Shivock lined out to shortstop, and the game stayed scoreless.

Keely McMillon continued her hot streak in the top of the third with a two-out single to center field. However, Jenny Law popped out to send the 0-0 game into the bottom of the second.

The Eagles exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on five hits and one Liberty error. Four of those runs came when Winthrop pitcher Chelsey Schoenfeldt hit a grand slam to center field, with another run scoring on a wild pitch by Tiffani Smith. Katrina Johnson entered the game in relief during the inning, as Winthrop took a 6-0 lead. The Eagles batted all the way around their lineup during the streak.

The Lady Flames responded in the top of the fourth, cutting Winthrop's lead in half with a three-run homer to left center field by Shivock, her third of the year. She drove in Ashley Bensinger, who reached on a Winthrop error, and Strickland, who had singled, allowing Liberty to bring the score to 6-3.

McMillon led off the top of the fifth with a double to right center, and advanced to third on a groundout by Law. She crossed the plate on the next play when Ashley Bensinger singled down the left field line, bringing Liberty within two runs.

Schoenfeldt added another Winthrop run in the bottom of the fifth with her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left, pushing the score to 7-4.

After a quiet sixth frame, Liberty had a final shot for a comeback in the top of the seventh. With one out, Bensinger drew a walk to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. But Strickland flied out to right, and Crisante grounded out, allowing the Eagles to walk away with the 7-4 win.

Shivock led the Lady Flames with three RBIs, while McMillon was 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Eagles were led by Schoenfeldt, who picked up the win in the circle and recorded two home runs to help her cause.

Smith suffered the loss, giving up two hits and four earned runs while striking out three batters in 2.1 innings. Schoenfeldt threw 4.1 innings, giving up seven hits and only one earned run.

The Lady Flames will face the Eagles in the third game of the weekend series, tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPNU from Terry Field.
