The Eagles exploded in the bottom of the third, scoring six runs on five hits and one Liberty error. Four of those runs came when Winthrop pitcher Chelsey Schoenfeldt hit a grand slam to center field, with another run scoring on a wild pitch by Tiffani Smith. Katrina Johnson entered the game in relief during the inning, as Winthrop took a 6-0 lead. The Eagles batted all the way around their lineup during the streak.
The Lady Flames responded in the top of the fourth, cutting Winthrop's lead in half with a three-run homer to left center field by Shivock, her third of the year. Schoenfeldt added another Winthrop run in the bottom of the fifth with her second home run of the game, a solo shot to left, pushing the score to 7-4.
After a quiet sixth frame, Liberty had a final shot for a comeback in the top of the seventh. With one out, Bensinger drew a walk to put the tying run in the on-deck circle. But Strickland flied out to right, and Crisante grounded out, allowing the Eagles to walk away with the 7-4 win.
