Lady Flames to Face Winthrop, Appear on ESPNU
The Liberty Lady Flames will continue 2011 Big South Conference play this weekend, traveling to Rock Hill, S.C., for a three-game series against the Eagles of Winthrop.
A doubleheader is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m., and the final game will begin Sunday at 2 p.m.
Sunday marks a historic event for the Liberty softball program, as the Lady Flames' game will be broadcast on ESPNU for the first time.
Liberty is 10-13 on the year, and 1-1 in Big South play after splitting a doubleheader with the 2010 Big South Champion Radford Highlanders on March 26. After dropping a 5-4 decision in Game 1, the Lady Flames stormed back for an 11-2 Game 2 victory.
The Lady Flames have recorded a season-high 13 hits in two of the last three games, pushing the team batting average up by nearly 20 points. Kelly Strickland leads the Lady Flames with a .328 average and five home runs, while reigning Big South Player of the Week Keely McMillon is hitting .429 in conference play.
The Liberty pitching staff currently ranks third in the Big South with a 3.22 cumulative ERA and a .260 opposing batting average. The staff is led by sophomore right-hander Katrina Johnson, who boasts the second-lowest ERA in the conference (1.67).
The Eagles, who finished as the 2010 Big South Championship runner-up behind Radford, are currently 8-20 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The team is led offensively by Brittany Stoudemire, who is batting .311 with 14 RBIs. Meanwhile, pitcher Chelsey Schoenfeldt is 3-6 on the year with a 3.43 ERA and 36 strikeouts.
Liberty and Winthrop have faced off 48 times, and each team has been victorious in 24 of those contests.
After Liberty swept the Eagles during the 2010 regular season, Winthrop roared back in the postseason tournament, defeating the Lady Flames, 4-3, in the championship bracket, and 4-0 in the finals of the consolation bracket.
Live stats for all three games will be available via GameTracker on LibertyFlames.com, and the final game on Sunday can be viewed on ESPNU.
