Rebekah Jenkins Named Freshman of the Week
Rebekah Jenkins has been named the Big South Women's Tennis Freshman of the Week for her performance in the Lady Flames' 5-2 victory over UNC Greensboro last week, as announced by the conference this morning. The award includes matches played from March 21-27.
The Sarasota, Fla., native opened the dual match with a swift 8-0 victory at No. 3 doubles with teammate Hannah Fick, knocking off Devon Sutherland and Dilara Yurtkuran.
After UNC Greensboro notched the doubles point and the first singles point to gain a 2-0 lead, the Lady Flames battled back. Jenkins won her No. 5 singles contest in three sets, 7-5, 2-6, 6-4, tying the overall dual, 2-2, and scoring her eighth win of the season. She emphatically ended her match with Annette Rios by firing an ace for the win, leading the way for three fellow freshmen to pick up three-set wins and a 5-2 victory over the visiting Spartans.
While UNC Greensboro was not ranked at the time, the Spartans were No. 70 in the ITA Women's National Team Rankings as recently as March 21.
Jenkins is the fourth different Liberty women's tennis player to be recognized by the Big South this season. Her sister, Jordan Jenkins, and freshman Cameron Richard swept the Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week awards for the week of Jan. 24-30. The following week (Jan. 31-Feb. 6), Hannah Fick garnered Player of the Week honors. Richard then notched her second conference nod for the week of March 7-13, as she was named Player of the Week.
The Lady Flames' schedule has been affected by weather as of late, with their last three contests being postponed. The next match on the ladies' slate is now April 4, when they travel to face Gardner-Webb for a 1 p.m. match in Boiling Springs, N.C.
