Virginia Tech Moves Past Liberty, Tuesday
Looking to extend its win streak to four games, the Liberty women's lacrosse team faced one of its toughest challenges in program history, hosting ACC member, Virginia Tech, Tuesday afternoon.
Unfortunately for the Lady Flames, the Hokies' aggressive offense put the visitor ahead early en route to an 18-2 win in their first visit to Osborne Stadium.
Liberty falls to 4-4 on the season, while the Hokies improve to 8-4 on the year. The Lady Flames' loss closes out their four-game homestand at 3-1.
Karis Walborn and Jen Freymond accounted for Liberty's two goals in the contest, while Virginia Tech's Caitlyn Wier and Allie Emala led the Hokies' offense with two tallies and three assists, apiece. Five other Virginia Tech players concluded the afternoon with two goals, followed by four Hokies with one each.
The Hokies burst out of the gate in the opening 6:20, posting five unanswered goals during the span. Walborn then put the Lady Flames on the board, firing a shot past goalkeeper Alex Gale to cut the deficit to 5-1 at 17:42. The tally marked Walborn's 21st of the season, tying her with teammate Nina Dunay for the team lead.
Virginia Tech held Liberty scoreless the remainder of the half, reeling off six more goals to take an 11-1 lead at halftime.
In the second period, Liberty lit up the board in the opening 33 seconds. Jen Moyer found an open Freymond, who finished on the play to give Liberty its second goal of the contest. The Jen and Jen connection gave the tandem their third goal and assist on the season, respectively.
Virginia Tech forced a running clock with a 10-goal lead eight minutes later and did not look back. The Hokies netted seven total markers in the second period for the 18-2 final.
