Flames Fall to Eagles
The Liberty Flames ran into a hot shooting Eagles squad Saturday afternoon, dropping an 8-1 decision to Winthrop in Big South Conference play at Eagle Field.
With the setback, Liberty falls to 2-2 in conference and 3-3 overall, while Winthrop moves to 1-0 in the Big South and 7-1-1 overall.
Senior David Kenga got the Eagles on the board early as he headed in a cross to the post by Matthew Skonicki for a 1-0 lead in the contest's seventh minute.
Liberty evened the match at 1-1 at the 15:38 mark. Sophomore midfielder Josh Boateng (Accra, Ghana) sent a cross into the box which Darryl Roberts (Sr., F, Trincity, Trinidad) laid off for Adrian Bumbut (Sr., MF, Zalau, Romania) who put it home for his second goal of the year.
Skonicki then found sophomore Daniel Revivo with a pass through the Flames defense to put Winthrop back on top for good at 2-1 in the 28th minute and with 15 minutes to play in the opening period Saidi Isaac began a four-goal performance as he got in behind the Liberty defense on a through ball from Kenga for a 3-1 advantage.
Winthrop went to intermission up 4-1 on Isaac's second tally of the match at 36:05.
The halftime break didn't slow the Eagles attack in the second as it added four more in the second half including two more by Isaac.
On the afternoon, Winthrop outshot Liberty, 13-7, while corner kicks were even at four each.
Liberty returns to action Monday afternoon as they step out of conference to host Gardner-Webb. Match time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
