Liberty Edges Fresno State, 14-13

Nina Dunay recorded her third five-goal game of the season on Tuesday afternoon, giving Liberty the 14-13 win over Fresno State.

The Liberty women's lacrosse team picked up its second win of the season, Tuesday afternoon, defeating Fresno State, 14-13, at Osborne Stadium.

The win moves Liberty to 2-3 on the season, allowing the Lady Flames to surpass their win total from last year, just five games into the 2011 campaign. Fresno State falls to 0-8 with the defeat.

Liberty leading scorer Nina Dunay led the Lady Flames with five goals, recording her third game with at least five goals this season. Junior Krisitin Crowley and freshman Karis Walborn both finished with a hat trick, while Candice Parsons, Camille Little and Jen Moyer each posted a marker to round out Liberty's scoring. Amanda Cross paced the Bulldogs with four first-half goals.

Dunay put Liberty on the board first with a free position goal at 27:10. Crowley followed up 26 ticks later with a marker on an assist from Little to give the Lady Flames the early 2-0 lead.

Fresno State and Liberty traded goals over the ensuing 10 minutes, with each team garnering three tallies during the span. After Emily Dinsmore helped Parsons find the net at 16:44, Dunay broke up the seesaw battle with another Liberty goal 1:34 later, thanks to a feed from Walborn. Dunay's tally gave the Lady Flames a solid 6-3 advantage near the halfway mark of the first period.

Back-to-back goals from Cross allowed the Bulldogs to climb within one at the 10:11 mark. Dunay then answered with her third marker on another free position opportunity to up the edge to a pair with 6:49 left in the stanza. Rachel Minarovich fired a shot past Liberty goalkeeper Kristen Masullo 48 seconds later to make it 7-6.

Walborn closed out the scoring for Liberty in the opening period, netting a shot off a pass from Crowley to regain the two-point margin at 5:33. Paula Badali answered just over a minute later for the Bulldogs, courtesy of a Natalie Harrington helper, putting Fresno State within one at halftime, 8-7.

In the second period, Liberty reeled off three-straight goals in the opening seven minutes to take an 11-7 lead. During the flurry Dunay, Walborn and Crowley all found the back of the net, while Moyer and Dunay chipped in assists. Crowley capped off the burst with a free position goal at 23:13.

After two unassisted Fresno State tallies put the Bulldogs with two, 11-9, Liberty reeled off three more goals. Dunay posted her fifth goal of the contest off an Audra Menez assist at 17:17. Menez then spread the wealth to Cammille Little just over two minutes later, as the Round Rock, Texas native recorded her first career goal. Walborn concluded the trio of tallies with a free position goal at 9:32, giving the Lady Flames a seemingly commanding 14-9 advantage.

The Bulldogs bit back, racking up four-straight goals in eight minutes. However, the Liberty defense held the visitors in check for the final 1:33 en route to the 14-13 final.

Liberty connected on 6-of-7 free position shots in the contest. Masullo spent the entire 60 minutes in the net, recording 14 saves on the day. On the opposite end, Katie Wilbur occupied the Fresno State goal for the duration of the contest, finishing with nine saves.

The Lady Flames remain at Osborne Stadium to open National Lacrosse Conference play with Detroit Mercy on Friday. The opening draw with the 1-4 Titans is slated for 4 p.m.
