Freshmen Lead Lady Flames' Sweep of Colgate
All five of the Lady Flames' freshmen notched victories Monday morning, as the Liberty women's tennis team kicked off its spring break matches in impressive fashion, defeating Colgate 7-0 in Orlando, Fla.
The Lady Flames' record levels at 6-6 with the victory, while Colgate's record falls to 3-6.
Doubles play featured two all-freshman pairings for the Liberty women, led by Cameron Richard and Rebekah Jenkins, who earned an 8-4 win in the No. 1 position over Alex Petrini and Stephanie Brown. The other combo was Annisha Domenech and Jessie Boda, who wrapped up an 8-4 victory in the No. 3 slot over Becky Silvers and Jen Marquit.
Carol Lobel and Valeriya Klintsevich also held down their No. 2 matchup, winning easily, 8-1 over Stephanie Bender and Kelsey Shea.
In singles, seniors Jordan Jenkins and Hannah Fick led off at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions, respectively. Jenkins wrapped up her match efficiently, only dropping one game on her way to the 6-0, 6-1 win against Bender. Fick defeated Petrini, 6-2, 6-1.
Richard and fellow freshman Alexandra Sheeran emphatically won their No. 3 and No. 4 matchups, as each produced a 6-0 win. Richard controlled Shea, 6-2, 6-0, while Sheeran took down Brown, 6-0, 6-3.
Lobel and Domenech wrapped up the sweep of the Lady Raiders, both winning in straight sets as well. Lobel picked up the win in her No. 5 contest, 6-3, 6-3 over Marquit, and Domenech defeated Silvers, 6-1, 6-1.
The Lady Flames continue their spring break competition in Orlando on Wednesday, when they face NJIT at 8 a.m.
