Flames Open in Orlando with Third-Straight Win

Mandeep Yadev won at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles with teammate Tristan Stayt to help the Flames sweep Colgate, 7-0, Monday morning.

The Flames opened their spring break trip with success, Monday morning, defeating Colgate, 7-0 in Orlando, Fla., to win their third-straight match.

The victory ups Liberty's record to 5-6 this season, while Colgate drops to 4-6 with the setback.

The Flames began strongly in doubles play, taking each match to secure the team point. Siim Tuus and Benjamin Wirth picked up their fifth-consecutive win in the No. 1 slot, defeating Phil Bernasek and Bobby Berkowitz, 8-4. The No. 2 pairing of Giancarlo Lemmi and Shea Thomas also continued their doubles success, posting their fifth win on the season as a duo. They defeated Alec Goldstein and John Beam, 8-4. Tristan Stayt and Mandeep Yadev completed the sweep, taking down Luke Gensburg and Sean Spellberg, 8-6.

The Flames' overpowering play continued in singles action, as they wrapped up the sweep with six victories. Each win came in straight sets.

Tuus faced the toughest matchup at the No. 1 position, taking the match in a tiebreaker for the second set. Tuus defeated Gensburg, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

At the No. 2 slot, Stayt beat out Goldstein, 6-2, 6-4.

Thomas and Lemmi owned the No. 3 and 4 positions, only giving up a combined three games to the Raiders. Thomas won his No. 3 contest, 6-1, 6-0 over Berkowitz, while Lemmi defeated Ruslan Goussiantnikov, 6-0, 6-2.

Meanwhile, Yadev and Stanislav Vaughan held down the final two spots in the lineup. Yadev came out on top in his No. 5 match, defeating Connor Feuille, 6-3, 6-2. Vaughan took care of Sean Spellberg, 6-2, 6-3.

The Liberty men's tennis team continues its spring break matches tomorrow morning, facing off with Bucknell in an 8 a.m. match.
