Liberty will face High Point in the semifinal round for the second straight season. Last year, the Lady Flames defeated the homestanding Panthers by a 73-55 score, led by Amber Mays' career-high 21 points.
The two teams took very different paths to reach Saturday's semifinal. Liberty trailed for much of the game before coming from behind to edge No. 8 seed Coastal Carolina, 51-44. Tolu Omotola led the way with 14 points, while Avery Warley added 12 points and 19 rebounds.
Meanwhile, High Point jumped out to a 12-1 lead against No. 5 seed Charleston Southern and never looked back. The Panthers cruised to a 77-49 victory, connecting on 11 of their 16 three-point attempts. Mackenzie Maier led High Point with 14 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three blocks.
Liberty won both regular-season matchups with the Panthers, recording a 68-60 victory at High Point on Jan. 3 and holding on for a 58-57 home triumph on Feb. 5. Warley played a key role in both wins, averaging 15.0 ppg and 14.5 rpg for the Lady Flames.
The Lady Flames are now 28-9 all-time against High Point, including 6-0 in the Big South Women's Basketball Championship. Liberty has also won nine straight games inside the Millis Center during the past three seasons.
Saturday's matchup will present a contrast in styles. High Point boasts an explosive offense. In the last two games, the Panthers are averaging 91.5 ppg and have made 29 three-pointers. Meanwhile, Liberty has held 13 straight opponents to 58 points or fewer.
