Lady Flames Gear Up For Stetson Classic

Bridgett Woods and the Lady Flames will face Jackson State, Iowa and Stetson this weekend in DeLand, Fla.

The Liberty Lady Flames will kick off their spring break trip to Florida this weekend, competing in the Stetson Classic in DeLand, Fla., Friday through Sunday.

The Lady Flames will first face Jackson State on Friday at 11 a.m., followed by a 1:30 p.m. contest against the Hawkeyes of Iowa.

Saturday brings another matchup against Iowa at 11 a.m., and Liberty will conclude round-robin play with a 4 p.m. game against host Stetson.

The championship and consolation finals will take place on Sunday at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.

The Lady Flames are 5-2 on the year after a 3-0 appearance in the UMBC Retriever Classic in Baltimore, Md., last weekend. The last two contests have been rained out, including a single game Tuesday against No. 7 Tennessee.

The team is led by senior outfielder Amber DePasquale, who is batting .375 on the year. Meanwhile, senior catcher Ashley Bensinger and junior outfielder Meredith Crisante have each tallied six RBIs, while Crisante ripped two home runs in Saturday's 11-3 win over Siena.

In the circle, 2011 Big South Preseason Pitcher of the Year Tiffani Smith is 3-1 with a 1.59 ERA and 23 strikeouts. At the UMBC Retriever Classic, freshman Alyssa DiMartino picked up her first career win, a 2-1 defeat of Mount St. Mary's, and sophomore Katrina Johnson earned her first career save in that same contest.

Scouting the Field

Jackson State
The Tigers are 5-10 this year, with three of their wins coming on their home field. Jackson State has won its last two contests, defeating Grambling State, 12-4, on Feb. 27, and beating Southeastern Louisiana, 2-1, on March 2. The Tigers are scheduled to play a single game against South Alabama tomorrow at 5 p.m.

The team is led by senior infielder Farren Wright, who is batting .425 with six doubles, and senior catcher Anesha McClendon, who is hitting .390 with 13 RBIs.

Freshman Breea Jamerson is 3-3 in the circle for Jackson State, posting a 3.34 ERA and 32.1 innings of work, while junior LeEthel Guillory leads the pitching staff with 35 strikeouts.

Friday morning's contest will mark the first-ever meeting between Liberty and Jackson State.

Iowa
The Hawkeyes are 8-9 in 2011, and dropped three straight games to finish the DiMarini Invitational in Fullerton, Calif., over the weekend. After defeating Cal State Fullerton, Iowa fell to California, IPFW and Murray State.

The team is led by senior infielder Chelsey Carmody, who is batting .375 with four doubles and five RBIs, while catcher Liz Watkins and outfielder Jenny Schuelke have each driven in 11 runs.

Freshman Kayla Massey leads the pitching staff with a 3.03 ERA and a 5-3 record, striking out 56 batters in 62.1 innings.

Friday also marks the first meeting between Liberty and Iowa.

Stetson
Stetson (10-8) has played all 18 games at home this season, and the Hatters are on a four-game winning streak after beating Tennessee State twice (1-0 and 3-0), plus posting victories over Elon (2-0) and Binghamton (4-2) to go unbeaten in the Stetson Invitational.

Senior infielder Jill Semento paces the team with a .348 average at the plate, while junior utility player Chelsey Trotto leads the team with 12 RBIs.

In the circle, rookie Meredith Owen is 3-2 with a 3.69 ERA and 25 strikeouts, while sophomore Camille Czarnecki is 5-3 with a 3.82 ERA.

The Lady Flames are 3-4 all-time against the Hatters, after splitting a doubleheader at Patricia Wilson Field on March 10, 2009.
