Lady Flames Edged by East Carolina
The Liberty women's tennis team split the singles contests with East Carolina Tuesday afternoon, but the Lady Pirates secured the doubles point to take the match 4-3 at the Hershey Tennis Courts on the campus of Liberty University.
The Lady Flames drop to 4-5 on the season, while East Carolina's women improve to 8-2 with the road win.
Jordan Jenkins and Cameron Richard scored the first doubles victory of the day, defeating Jessica Cook and Audrey LePottier, 8-3, in the No. 1 spot. Natalie Collins and Petra Vogel then took the No. 2 match, knocking off Carol Lobel and Alexandra Sheeran, 8-4.
In the deciding match for the doubles point, Manon Bissat and Neena Wanko held off a late charge from the Lady Flames' No. 3 combo of Hannah Fick and Rebekah Jenkins, winning 8-6 to secure the doubles point.
Straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles for the visitors spread Liberty's deficit to 3-0, but they began a charge with three, three-set wins.
Jenkins responded in the lead singles match, defeating Cook, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, while freshman Annisha Domenech rallied to beat Bissat, 1-6, 6-0, 6-1. Lobel provided the tying match in the No. 5 position, defeating Wanko. Despite dropping the opening set, 6-3, the junior claimed the final two sets, 6-4, 6-3.
In the deciding match of the contest, Vogel managed a three-set victory over Hannah Fick in the No. 2 position in the lineup. After Fick won 6-3 to open, Vogel claimed the final two, 6-2, 6-1.
Liberty's women's team has a short break from competition, but returns to the courts on March 11 for its second Big South match up. Presbyterian will come to Lynchburg for a 1 p.m. contest.
