Liberty Men Defeated by Winthrop
After sweeping Winthrop in doubles play, the Liberty men's tennis team dropped each singles match, falling 6-1 in its first Big South contest of the year on Saturday afternoon at the Memorial Courts in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Flames (2-6, 0-1 Big South) opened the dual by taking each doubles contest by the same score, 8-5, to secure the doubles point in the match.
The pairing of Siim Tuus and Benjamin Wirth defeated Sergey Belov and Liran Levy at No. 1, while Giancarlo Lemmi and Shea Thomas knocked off Nadav Ruppin and Guy Kubi at No. 2. The Flames wrapped up the doubles sweep with Tristan Stayt and Mandeep Yadev taking down Dejon Bivens and Yuta Hirokawa.
Singles play provided a different story, however, as the Eagles (4-5, 1-0 Big South) struck back by taking each of the six matches.
Stayt and Yadev put up fights in their No. 2 and No. 5 matches, respectively, taking their Eagle opponents to a deciding third set. After dropping his opening set, 6-1, Stayt squared the match with a 6-1 win of his own against Bivens. In the final set, Bivens edged Stayt, 7-6, for the win.
Meanwhile, Yadev also fell a set behind, losing the opening set, 6-2 to Ruppin. Yadev then forced a deciding frame by winning the second set by a slim 7-6 margin. Ruppin closed the match by earning a 10-6 win in the third set.
The men's tennis team will take on Charlotte tomorrow afternoon at the 49ers' home courts in a 1 p.m. match.
