Liberty Picks Up 9-2 Win over Drexel
The Lady Flames picked up their first win of 2011 Saturday afternoon, recording 10 hits in a 9-2 win over Drexel.
Liberty improves to 1-1 on the year, while the Dragons drop to 2-5.
Eight Lady Flames recorded hits in the contest, and 2010 Big South Co-Freshman of the Year Katrina Johnson only gave up two hits in six complete innings. Liberty also took advantage of six Drexel errors.
The Lady Flames put a run on the board in the top of the first, thanks in part to a Drexel fielding error. Freshman designated player Katie Zavodny led off with an infield single, then promptly stole second. After reaching third on a wild pitch, Zavodny crossed the plate when shortstop Devon Metcalf fumbled a grounder by Ashley Bensinger, and Liberty took a 1-0 lead.
But the Dragons responded in the bottom of the first, scoring two runs on two hits and a Liberty miscue, claiming a 2-1 advantage.
The errors continued in the second inning, with the Lady Flames taking advantage of two more Drexel mistakes. Kaylee West led off, reaching first on another error by Metcalf. Meredith Crisante followed, reaching second on a throwing error by third baseman Caprice Demirgian, and West moved to third. Bridgett Woods then placed a timely single down the right field line, allowing both West and Crisante to score.
Amber DePasquale carried that momentum with a double down the left field line, and one out later, Jenny Law tapped an RBI single to shallow right field, then scored along with DePasquale when Bensinger ripped a single up the middle. Thanks to five hits in the second frame, Liberty took a 6-2 lead.
After four quiet frames, Liberty padded its lead by scoring three more runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Sammi Shivock reached on a fielding error by Metcalf, and moved to third when West doubled to center field. Pinch hitter Jill Stephens then stepped up to record her first career hit, an RBI single through the left side.
The Lady Flames didn't stop there, as DePasquale ripped a triple to center field to bring in two more runs and give Liberty the 9-2 lead.
Drexel couldn't respond in their final at-bat, and the Lady Flames walked away with the win.
DePasquale and West led the Liberty offense, each batting 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Bensinger also drove in two runs.
The Dragons were led by designated player Hilary Allen, who was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Johnson (1-0) picked up the win, striking out two batters in the process, while Shyann Beach (0-1) suffered the loss in the circle.
The Lady Flames are back in action this afternoon in the College of Charleston Cougar Classic, facing the Red Foxes of Marist at noon.
