Freshman Setter Kallie Corbin

Freshman Setter Kallie Corbin

Each Wednesday throughout the volleyball season, fans will get the opportunity to know one of the Liberty volleyball players a bit better through a question-and-answer session.  Today, the series continues with freshman setter Kallie Corbin, who was recently included on the all-tournament team at the Virginia Tech Hokie Invite.

What is your favorite Bible verse and why?
"A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back- to- back and conquer." – Ecclesiastes 4:12. I find that this verse gives me peace and strength in both myself and in my teammates.
What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie is probably "A League of Their Own."
What is your favorite memory while competing in your sport?
This memory will forever stay with me since it was my first year playing volleyball. I was 12 years old playing on a team of all 14 year olds and I was the starting setter. We were in the third game and we needed one more point.  I was just about to set the ball, but instead I threw it over, right over the middle blocker's hands. That was the first setter's dump I had ever done in my life and it was to win the game!
What is your most embarrassing memory while competing in your sport?
I have so many embarrassing stories. This one time I was in a very intense match and there were these court dividers that were made of a net material. I was running to save a ball and I dove into this netted divider. I got the ball back into play, but when I tried to run back to my base position, my Velcro ankle brace attached itself to the net. I ended up dragging the net halfway onto the court and then to top it off I tripped backwards. Let's just say I drew a lot of attention to myself.
I came to Liberty because…
When I stepped on the campus I knew that God was present. My parents and I had a long conversation on what I want in my college experience and Liberty fit all of them. I quote Katie Feenstra, "Why not Liberty?"
Share something that people don't know about you.
I am a huge musical theatre fanatic! I was in three stage musicals in high school, one of which I got a leading role. I listen to Broadway show tunes and I try to keep up with all the stage news. On top of that I also play the Irish Whistle, recorder and harmonica by ear.
What has been your defining moment as an athlete?
When I stepped out onto the court as a Division I collegiate athlete.
What is one question you would ask Dr. Falwell?
"Are you going to come to our first home match?"
If you could be somebody else for a day, who would you be and why?
I would love to be Sutton Foster. Sutton Foster is a Tony-winning musical theatre star. She has so much respect in the theatre world and she has an amazing voice. I want to be her, because I love the volleyball court, but to be on a Broadway stage and get to experience a true Broadway standing ovation, that would be awesome!
Who is your favorite Liberty athlete?
Kendall Nichols, # 15 on the Lady Flames volleyball team. Ever since my official visit to Liberty, she has been so encouraging and a blessing in my life.
What is the best advice you have ever been given?
Since I was young my Mom and Dad have always told me to, "Let your light shine, Kallie."
If you could change one rule in your sport, what would it be and why?
I would say that setters could block any overpasses at any time, even if they are back row. I always jump trying to block the overpass or just stand at the net hoping somebody gets a touch on the hit. I feel very helpless and like I'm not really helping the team when that happens.
After graduation I would like to …
Go to New York and spend a year there working in an internship for NBC or Dateline. I would love to maybe get a backstage job for a Broadway musical, either managing or working with the actors.
In my spare time, I like to …
Sing! I love to sing in the shower and in the car. I also love having long conversations about faith and beliefs.
Words that describe me on the athletic field (and why) are …
Competitive.  I don't allow myself to lose.  When I do, I don't allow it to happen again.
Aggressive.  I always tell my teammates that I am not always the nicest person on the court, but what happens on the court stays on the court.
Leader.  I am a setter, which is the "quarterback" position in volleyball. I find it very hard not to take a leadership role on the court, even when I should not at times.
If you could compete in any sport against any athlete, who would it be and why?
Beach volleyball against Misty May. Misty May is an athlete that gives 100% at every match and it would just be an honor to play her.
My craziest ambition in life is to …
Take a bow on a Broadway stage.
Do you have any pre-game rituals?
I take a shower, have my hair parted on the side, pray for safety, patience and strength and I listen to inspirational music.
Who is one person in history that you would like to meet and why?
Joan of Ark. I think this woman had so much passion for God and what she stood for. Her inner peace and knowledge were astounding. I just find that her passion is so infectious, that I could only hope it would rub off onto me.
A place I've always wanted to visit, but never had the chance is (and why)?
I have always wanted to visit a movie set. I have always been fascinated with how movies are filmed and what all goes into filming a movie.
