Tennis Teams Face Road Matches in N.C. this Weekend
Liberty's men's and women's tennis teams hit the road this weekend for a pair of dual matches in North Carolina. On Sunday, the Flames and Lady Flames will face off with UNC Wilmington, before finishing the trip against Campbell in Buies Creek on Monday.
The men's contests will begin at noon and 1 p.m., while both of the women's matches are slated for 1 p.m. starts.
The Flames are coming off a 7-0 loss to Appalachian State on Feb. 4 and are 1-2 on the season. In the series with UNC Wilmington, the Seahawks hold the 3-1 advantage.
UNC Wilmington is 1-1 on the year, opening with a 4-1 defeat of Davidson, followed by a 7-0 defeat against N.C. State. They host Campbell on Saturday afternoon, before facing Liberty on Sunday.
While the Flames have had doubles success early in the season, they'll have to match up against the senior duo of Michael Pereira and Kinshuk Sharma for UNC Wilmington. The pair is currently ranked 43rd in the national men's doubles ranking released by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The Lady Flames will also be looking for the program's second victory over UNC Wilmington, as the Lady Seahawks hold a 5-1 lead in the series. The Liberty women are 2-1 this season, winning their last two matches over West Virginia (5-2) and Davidson (7-0).
UNC Wilmington's women's team is 3-1 this season after competing in the VCU Duals. They defeated Hampton (5-0), Norfolk State (5-0) and Penn (3-2), while dropping a contest to host VCU (4-1). In the VCU match, the Lady Seahawks' Christina Lee knocked off 68th ranked Josefin Hjertquist, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 in No. 2 singles. UNC Wilmington's women will also host Campbell on Saturday, before welcoming Liberty on Sunday.
The Lady Flames' Jordan Jenkins comes into the weekend undefeated, posting a 2-0 record in singles, as well as a 3-0 doubles record with teammate Cameron Richard. Jenkins holds down the No. 1 spot in both line ups.
Campbell has opened the season 2-0 with 5-0 defeats of Howard and Georgetown at the VCU Indoor Invitational. They hold the 9-3 edge in the series history with the Flames. The Camels' senior Davy Sum opened his senior season with two straight-set victories, and has a 90-29 career record in singles. With his opening weekend's performance, Sum earned honors as the Atlantic Sun's Men's Tennis Player of the Week.
The Lady Flames face Campbell looking to even the series record at two a piece, as Campbell leads 2-1.
Campbell's women's team also has opened the season with a 2-0 start, defeating Howard (3-2) and Georgetown (4-1), at the same event as its men's team. Freshman Karolina Chernaya also claimed Atlantic Sun honors after her 2-0 opening weekend in the No. 1 spot, being named the women's tennis Player of the Week.
The Lady Flames have had nabbed their own conference honors early in the season, as three members of the team have been given Big South weekly honors. Jenkins and Richard swept the Player and Freshman of the Week selections in their first week of competition, while senior Hannah Fick was named the Player of the Week in the most recent weekly awards.
