Junior Giancarlo Lemmi and the Flames' tennis team begin the 2011 season on Thursday.

The Liberty men's tennis team will launch its 2011 schedule this week with two matches, squaring off with East Carolina on Thursday and Bluefield on Friday. Both contests take place at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W. Va., with 11 a.m. and 9 a.m. start times.

The squad is coming off a 12-10 record in 2010. This included a 4-2 mark in Big South play, tying the 2003 team for the best regular-season conference record in program history.

Despite graduating three seniors from last year's squad, the Flames 2011 team has talented players who have experienced success.

As a freshman last season, Siim Tuus held down the number one spot for the Flames and garnered all-conference honors in singles, while being named the Big South Freshman of the Year.

Junior Giancarlo Lemmi also earned all-conference honors, being named to the doubles team with former teammate Chad Simpson. The pair posted a 13-6 overall mark in the spring and suffered just one loss in Big South play, ending with a 5-1 record.

Tristan Stayt and Benjamin Wirth also return from last year's team, while head coach Chris Johnson has also added four freshmen and senior transfer, David Kwon to the 2011 roster.

The match with East Carolina is the fifth between the programs, with Liberty looking to notch its first win in the series. Last season, the Pirates edged the Flames, 4-3, with each team grabbing three wins in singles and East Carolina taking the doubles point. East Carolina went on to finish the year with an 18-8 record.

The Flames are 2-0 against Bluefield, including blanking the Rams last year, 7-0.
