The 2010 Liberty Lady Flames Volleyball Team

Liberty Athletics' success continues not only on the field of competition, but also in the classroom, as the department has achieved a noteworthy milestone. For the first time in recorded department history, the cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of its student-athletes is above the 3.0 mark.

With Liberty University students returning to the classroom for the spring semester earlier this week, the Office of Academic Affairs for Athletics has released its final calculations for the fall semester.

The cumulative GPA of Liberty's student-athlete population is a 3.005, raising above the 3.00 mark for the first known time in the four-decade history of the department.

The Academic Affairs for Athletics office tracks the academic progress for each of the Athletics Department's 17 programs (including cheerleading and treating track and field and cross country as combined programs).

Eleven of the 17 athletics programs posted a team GPA above the 3.0 mark during the fall semester, while 13 of the 17 athletics programs currently have a 3.0 or higher cumulative team GPA.

Additionally, the Academic Affairs for Athletics office will be honoring a record-setting number of student-athletes at its annual Academic Awards Banquet in April.

Designed to recognize student-athletes with a cumulative 3.0 or higher GPA, the banquet will see 285 invitees this spring, 62 more student-athletes than the previous year's festive gala and nearly 100 more than two years ago.

The Lady Flames' volleyball program not only captured the 2010 Big South regular-season title, but also posted the department's highest team GPA during the fall (3.59). The squad currently leads all 17 of Liberty's athletics programs with a 3.54 cumulative team GPA. All eight of Liberty's women's athletics programs currently have a 3.0 or higher cumulative team GPA.

Leading the charge for Liberty's eight men's athletics programs is men's soccer. The team posted its fourth-straight 10-plus win season and finished the fall with a 3.31 team GPA and a 3.36 cumulative GPA mark. Five of Liberty's eight men's athletics programs have a 3.0 or higher cumulative team GPA.
