Liberty to Open Big South Play at High Point

The last time Liberty played at the Millis Center, Devon Brown hit this shot to win the 2010 Big South Championship title contest against Gardner-Webb.

Liberty (5-7, 0-0 Big South) will play at High Point (6-7, 0-0 Big South) on Monday, the opening day of 2010-11 Big South Conference women's basketball competition. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Millis Center, for a matchup between the first (Liberty) and third-place (High Point) teams in the Big South preseason poll.

Liberty has won 12 of its last 14 Big South openers, but the Lady Flames have never faced the Panthers in their first conference game of the season.

The Lady Flames own a 26-9 advantage in the all-time head-to-head series against High Point, including three victories over the Panthers last season. Devon Brown played well versus High Point during her freshman campaign, averaging 23.0 ppg and 9.0 rpg versus the Panthers a year ago.

Brown racked up 15 of her season-high 19 points during the first 8:06 of the second half, Dec. 29 versus La Salle, leading the Lady Flames to a 73-53 triumph in their last outing. Liberty has now won two of its last three games.

High Point's most recent contest also came on Dec. 29, and the Panthers lost , 66-60, at Georgia Southern. Senior guard Frances Fields paced High Point with 13 points.

For the season, junior forward Shamia Brown leads the Panthers in scoring (11.3 ppg), while senior post player Mackenzie Maier tops the Big South in both three-point field goal percentage (.447) and blocked shots (2.9 bpg).

High Point is 3-1 at the Millis Center this season, while the Lady Flames are just 2-7 away from home.
