During the transition from cross country season to indoor track & field season, Nick Pierce caught up with head coach Brant Tolsma and back-to-back NCAA national cross country champion Sam Chelanga.

The conversation recapped the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships, contested in Terre Haute, Ind., on Nov. 22. Chelanga outsprinted Arizona's Stephen Sambu down the final straightaway, becoming only the 10th men's runner in meet history to successfully repeat as national champion. Teammate Evans Kigen joined Chelanga on the starting line in Terre Haute, and earned his second consecutive cross country All-America honor with a 31st-place finish.

Both Chelanga and Tolsma then looked ahead to track & field season, which will begin Friday and Saturday with the Liberty Kickoff. The two-day meet at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center will get started Friday at 2 p.m. and resume Saturday at 9 a.m.
