Following the program's most success fall season in Liberty's history, the Flames men's golf program has received recognition in the national rankings.
At the conclusion of its fall tournament slate, Liberty finds itself ranked No. 41 nationally in both the Golfweek and Golfstat team rankings, the program's highest national rankings at this point in the golf season. Last year, Liberty finished the spring season ranked No. 88 in both the Golfweek and Golfstat national listings.
Additionally, the influx of five freshmen has caught the attention of the national golfing world, as Golfstat has Liberty's freshmen class ranked No. 13 nationally. This national ranking is based upon the impact each program's freshmen class had on its overall fall season.
As a team, Liberty finished three out of four fall events in the Top 3 or better and posted a 290.8 team stroke average. The Flames opened the year with a third-place showing at the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
The 15-team event featured 12 programs which finished last year ranked inside the Top 75. The Flames closed the event with a program-best 17-under 271 to post a three-day, nine-under par 855.
Additionally, the Flames finished the Rees Jones Intercollegiate, hosted by Michigan State, tied for first with Kennesaw State. The Owls were able to capture the team title on the first playoff hole.
Robert Karlsson, the reigning Big South Men's Golfer of the Year, is the top ranked golfer in the Big South following fall competition. The junior, who finished among the Top 10 in three out of four fall events, is ranked No. 95 by Golfweek and No. 88 by Golfstat.
Liberty's freshmen class saw the greatest impact from Chase Marinell and Ian McConnell. Marinell, a native of Fort Myers, Fla., posted three Top 25 finishes during his first four collegiate events and finished the fall with a 74.3 stroke average.
McConnell, a golfer out of Riverview, Fla., individually captured medalist honors at the Richmond Invitational with a seven-under par 209 and finished the fall with a 73.8 stroke average. Both Marinell and McConell currently are listed inside the Big South's Top 20 golfer ranking.
The Big South recognized more Liberty golfers than any other program this fall, as the Flames captured four of the league's eight Big South Golfer of the Week honors. Karlsson was honored twice, while McConnell and Preston Dembowiak each took home one of the weekly accolades.
Liberty will return to the golf links on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 for the JU Invitational, hosted by Mark McCumber, at the PLAYERS Stadium Course at the TPC – Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
The Flames played in the same event last year and finished tied for fifth place at the world-renowned golf course. Max McKay led the Flames with an eighth-place finish, as the Jacksonville, Fla., native played in his own backyard.
