Eli Sanchez scored a fall for the Red team in the 165-pound weight class, leading the squad to a 23-10 win in the preseason dual scrimmage.

Just nine days before opening the season on the road at the Terrapin Duals, the wrestling team held its annual Red and Blue intrasquad matches on Thursday night, inside the Vines Center.

Despite the Blue team jumping out to a 10-7 lead after the first five bouts, the Red team claimed the last three matches, including back-to-back pins, to win the overall dual scrimmage, 23-10. Head Coach Jesse Castro will use the event to help set the upcoming season's line up.

The Red team jumped out to a quick lead behind a 15-6 major decision by freshman Rob Jillard over Joel Stafford at 125 pounds. Jillard controlled the match from the beginning, posting 10 points in the opening period by way of a takedown, a pair of three-point near falls and a two-point near fall. Stafford tallied four points in the closing period, but multiple reversals by Jillard kept the match out of reach.

In the 133-pound bout, the Blue team answered back with a 4-2 decision from returning NCAA national qualifier, Joe Pantaleo over T.J. Mitchell. In one of the closest matches on the night, the first points weren't scored until the second period, when Mitchell claimed points on a reversal after starting in the down position. Pantaleo escaped for a point just 15 seconds later, and Mitchell held the 2-1 advantage going into the final 2:00. After also starting in the down position, Pantaleo escaped just 10 seconds into the final period, locking the score at 2-2. With only four seconds remaining in the bout, Pantaleo scored a takedown to claim the win.

The Red team stretched its lead back to four after Seth Hicks defeated Joey Montgomery by a 7-4 decision in the 141-pound match. Just two points were tallied in the first period, with Hicks earning a takedown at the halfway mark. In the second time frame, Montgomery scored on two takedowns, to head into the final period with the 4-3 edge. After starting in the down position, Hicks did all the scoring in the final period, managing an escape, a takedown, and also picking up a point for having a 1:43 riding time advantage.

Another returning NCAA national qualifier, Scott Clymer, retaliated for the Blue team, blanking Miguel Rodriguez, 4-0 to earn the decision at 149 pounds and close Red's lead to just one, 7-6. The redshirt junior scored on a takedown in the first, an escape in the second, and closed the match with 2:03 of riding time for his fourth and final point.

The Blue team took their first lead on the evening in the dual behind a 13-1 major decision from senior captain Julian Colon over Peter Crawford. After taking the 4-1 lead in the opening period of the 157-pound bout, Colon added seven points in the second period, and never looked back.

At the 165-pound weight class, Eli Sanchez didn't take long to respond for the Red team, earning the victory by fall 1:46 into the match against freshman Jonathan Perkins. The pin gave the Red team a 13-10 edge and a lead they would not relinquish.

Freshman Royal Brettrager II upped the Red‘s lead to 19-10, earning his own victory by fall (3:40) over Marcus Nielson in the 174-pound bout. The bout was evenly contested up until the pin, with Brettrager holding the 6-4 edge before taking the victory, and sealing the dual victory for the Red squad.

In the final regulation bout at 197 pounds, Aaron Thompson claimed the 11-2 major decision over Jon Weber, making the final score 23-10 in favor of the Red team. Thompson opened up a commanding 7-1 lead in the first period as a result of two takedowns and a three-point near fall. In the final period, he added an escape, a takedown and a point for accumulating 2:08 of riding time.

In the ninth match of the night, Andrew Goolsby and Nathan Nelson faced off in an exhibition match at 133 pounds. After entering the final period tied, 2-2, each grappler would score on a reversal. However, the difference was Goolsby holding on to 1:07 of riding time to pick up the extra point and a 5-4 victory.

To open the 2010-11 schedule, the Flames travel to College Park, Md., to face off with Maryland, McDaniel, Johns Hopkins and West Virginia in the first-ever Terrapin Duals on Nov. 6.

Liberty is only familiar with Maryland, as they have met twice in the programs' history, while the remaining three teams will be first time opponents for the squad.
