Jenkins and Fick Compete in Billie Jean King
Jordan Jenkins and Hannah Fick represented the Lady Flames well as they combined for a 6-3 record in their singles and doubles play at the prestigious USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center Women's Collegiate Invitational in Flushing, N.Y.
Playing at the site of the U.S. Open, Jenkins returned to the facility where she claimed the Flight B singles title a year ago, this time looking for success in the A flight of the draws. In the round of 16 Jenkins met Elizabeth Epstein of Yale, who she defeated in the championship match last season. However, Epstein avenged last year's loss by picking up the win, 7-6 (5), 7-5, 11-9.
Jenkins' play continued in the backdraw of the A flight, where she picked up two victories. The first came over Elmine Botes of Farleigh Dickinson, 6-2, 6-2, before defeating Samantha Rosekrans of Harvard, 6-4, 6-1.
Fick looked to keep the Flight B Singles title in the hands of Liberty, but faced a tough field. She opened play against Rutgers' No. 3 seeded Jennifer Holzberg and was able to take the match in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 10-6. In the next round, Fick faced Natalie Blosser of Harvard, in a match which once again went three sets. After dropping the opening set, 2-6, Fick turned the tables and won the final two sets, 6-4, 10-7 to earn the victory and advance to the semifinals, where another seeded opponent was waiting. No. 2 seed Misia Krasowski of Brown ended Fick's run by taking the match in straight sets, 6-1, 6-0.
Jenkins and Fick also teamed up to compete in the Flight A Doubles draw. In the round of 16 the pair defeated Elmine Botes and Irina Dementyeva of Farleigh Dickinson, 9-8. The senior pair then faced Lenka Hojckova and Tana Illova of N.C. State in the next round, and was defeated by the eventual champions in the draw, 8-6. In the backdraw of the brackets, Jenkins and Fick defeated Nicole Bartnik and Chelsea Davis of Columbia, 8-3, to finish out their doubles play together.
Jenkins and Fick will return to action with their fellow Lady Flames in the ITA Indoor Regionals in Norfolk, Va., Oct. 20-23.
