Coach Jake Shellenberger talks to his athletes at Tuesday's first official practice.

Clad in Liberty Flames swimsuits and caps, the first-ever Liberty women's swim team held its first official practice, Tuesday afternoon, at the LaHaye Student Center.

Under the direction of Head Coach Jake Shellenberger and Assistant Coach Jessica Barnes, the 2010-11 squad will open the season with a home meet against Campbell on Oct. 2.

The team gathered at 2 p.m. on the deck of the pool, as Shellenberger went over the practice plan. Senior Woman Administrator Meredith Eaker also made an appearance, and reminded the girls that they were making history.

Then, the 17 student-athletes lined up and dove in, and the pool came to life as the girls began warming up.

"After two months of waiting, Jessica and I are thrilled to get started today," commented Shellenberger. "Our first practice is one of many small steps we'll take in order to build a championship program, and we'll start with that long-term goal in mind. Some of the most important things we do this year will not happen in the pool, and developing a culture of dedication and commitment is one of our highest priorities."
