Liberty Sweeps Volleyball Weekly Honors
For the first time in program history, the Liberty Lady Flames swept the Big South weekly volleyball awards, as Karyl Bacon was the Big South Conference Choice Hotels Player of the Week, Jade Craycraft was tabbed the Freshman of the Week and Kelly Haseman picked up Defensive Player of the Week honors for matches played during the opening weekend of the season.
Liberty also becomes the first school in Big South history to sweep all three honors in the same week.
Bacon, a senior from Temecula, Calif., recorded three straight double-doubles to open the season for the second time in her career, and notched her 30th career double-double against East Carolina. She put away 46 kills, averaged a .268 attack percentage at the net and finished with 3.83 kills per set to lead the Lady Flames to a 2-1, second-place finish at the East Carolina Classic.
Bacon also had match-high kills in all three matches, and was named to the ECU Classic All-Tournament Team. This marks her first career Player of the Week honor.
Craycraft, a setter from Wooster, Ohio, dished out a tournament-high 119 assists to average 9.92 helpers per set. In her collegiate debut against Cleveland State, she recorded a match-high 50 assists to help push the Vikings to five sets.
Craycraft also led all players in the tournament with nine service aces, including three consecutive aces against tournament host East Carolina, and also received All-Tournament Team honors.
Haseman, a junior libero from Three Rivers, Mich., led all players in the ECU Classic with 65 digs, and tallied match-high dig totals against Charlotte (25) and East Carolina (18). Against East Carolina, Haseman was at the service line for seven of eight straight Liberty points to give the Lady Flames a 19-13 lead in the final set. She spearheaded a Lady Flames defense that held their opponents to a .124 attack percentage at the ECU Classic.
This marks the second time Haseman has won Defensive Player of the Week honors in her career. She last won the award on Oct. 26, 2009.
The Lady Flames will return to action this weekend, competing in the UVA Holiday Inn Jefferson Cup in Charlottesville, Va. Liberty's first match is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. on Friday against George Washington.
