Before heading into their season opener with No. 17 Virginia on Friday, the Liberty women's soccer team travelled to Davidson, N.C. for a for a preseason test on Monday, passing with flying colors. The Lady Flames squared off against the Wildcats in a 90-minute scrimmage, outscoring the defending Southern Conference Champions, 3-0.

After 12 scoreless minutes, senior captain Maria Owen found the net to put the Lady Flames on the board. The forward created the opportunity when she picked up a loose ball just over midfield, dribbled past the first defender, split two more defenders and finished the play by bending a hard, low shot past the goalkeeper from 24 yards.

The upperclassman was not the only one who shined in the humid weather conditions, as a pair of Liberty freshman also made their mark in the contest. Immediately following a midfield free kick by senior Maggie Woody in the 23rd minute, forward Casey Norris ran onto the crossing pass, heading it over the goalkeeper into the far post for Liberty's second marker.

Fellow freshman Megan Warner completed the Lady Flames' trio of goals in the 78th minute after receiving a pass from senior Alyssa Andersen and hitting a 25-yard shot just below the crossbar for the 3-0 final. Senior goal keeper and 2009 Big South all-tournament team member Ashley Nyholt managed the net in the opening 60 minutes. Freshman goalkeeper Alexa Hormann took over in goal for the final 30 minutes to secure the shutout.

"I'm proud of our girls and their efforts throughout the summer," Liberty Head Women's Soccer Coach Jessica Hain stated. "This first game is a reflection of their hard work and discipline which began months ago. I see a clear desire from within our team to create a solid platform based on their love for Christ and their sacrifice for each other. They are a determined group and I am blessed to be a part their lives as they seek to live out their faith on the field this season."
