J'nae Jefferson was 2-for-4 at the plate as the Lady Flames fell to the Blue Hose, 4-2.

The Blue Hose of Presbyterian used a four-run sixth inning to claim a 4-2 victory over the Lady Flames, Saturday afternoon, in Game 1 of a Big South Conference doubleheader.

The Lady Flames came out hitting in the top of the first. With one out, Jenny Law and Kelly Strickland hit back-to-back singles, and moved to third and second when Meredith Baisden grounded out to first. But the runners stayed stranded when Kaylee West struck out swinging for the third out.

The Blue Hose immediately put a runner in scoring position in the bottom of the first when Tera Powell led off with a double to left. But the Liberty defense recorded three straight outs to keep Powell from advancing.

Presbyterian made another threat in the bottom of the second. With two outs, Amanda Miller was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third when Rachel Hopper singled down the left field line and moved to second on the throw. But center fielder Amber DePasquale made a diving catch on a fly ball by Lindsey Trombley to get the Lady Flames out of the jam.

The Lady Flames jumped on the board in the top of the third, taking a 1-0 lead. With one out, J'nae Jefferson singled through the left side, then stole second. Law reached on another single to right, then advanced to second on the throw, and Jefferson was safe at third. Jefferson crossed the plate to score the game's first run when Strickland hit a deep sacrifice fly to right.

Liberty cushioned its lead, scoring another run in the top of the fifth. With one out, Jefferson doubled to left center and advanced to third on the throw, and pinch runner Jenna Eatmon was thrown out at home on the play. Law then singled through the right side to drive in Jefferson, putting the Lady Flames up, 2-0.

The Lady Flames ran into trouble in the bottom of the sixth, as the Blue Hose scored four runs on three hits to take a 4-2 lead. Powell led off with an infield single, then stole second. She moved onto third when Morgan Durham singled through the left side and moved to second on the throw, and Taylor Staten drew a walk to load the bases with nobody out.

Katie Anderson then reached on a fielder's choice to shortstop, and Strickland's throw to the plate wasn't in time, as Powell scored Presbyterian's first run.

Designated player Leslie Hensley then hit a deep sacrifice fly to left, driving in Durham, and Howell singled up the middle to bring in Staten. Anderson then scored when Amanda Miller was out on a sacrifice bunt, giving Presbyterian a 4-2 advantage.

Liberty failed to muster a comeback in their final at-bat, and the Blue Hose walked away with the 4-2 win.

With the loss, the Lady Flames drop to 33-15 overall and 9-4 in Big South play, while Presbyterian improves to 19-24 overall and 3-13 in the Big South.

The Lady Flames were led by Law, who was 3-for-3 with one RBI, and Jefferson, who was 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

Powell paced the Blue Hose, batting 2-for-3 with a run scored, while Anderson, Hensley, Powell and Miller each drove in a run.

Tiffani Smith drops to 18-6 with the loss, giving up five hits and striking out six batters in six complete innings. Howell (4-7) gave up six hits and struck out three Liberty batters in seven complete innings of work.

The two teams will face off for Game 2 of today's doubleheader, later this afternoon.
