Siim Tuus was named the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year and all-conference in singles.

Liberty's Siim Tuus was named the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Freshman of the Year and three other Flames earned conference men's tennis honors, the league office announced this evening.

Tuus also was selected all-conference in singles, while the pair of Chad Simpson and Giancarlo Lemmi were named all-conference in doubles by a vote of the Big South men's tennis coaches. Louis Steyn was named Men's Tennis Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Playing at No. 1, Tuus finished his first season of collegiate action, with a 7-13 overall record and a 2-4 record in Big South play. The Rakvere, Estonia native highlighted his year with back-to-back wins over ranked opponents, including fellow all-conference singles team member Ivan Salec of Radford. His win against Salec led the Flames to a 4-3 win against the Highlanders, Radford's first Big South Conference loss since the 2007 season. His six wins at the No. 1 flight helped Liberty to win eight of 10 matches in the span of March 8-April 10 and earned him Big South Player of the Week honors during the week of April 5.

Simpson and Lemmi combined for a 13-5 record, including a 5-1 conference mark during the 2010 campaign. Liberty's winningest doubles pairing this season, the two won seven consecutive contests from March 6 – 28. Eleven of the duo's wins led to Liberty winning the doubles point.

Steyn becomes the first Liberty men's tennis player to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year, sharing the award with Igor Ogrizek of Radford. Steyn was also named to the all-academic team for the second straight year. The senior went 13-6 in singles this season, while teaming with Juan Reyes for most of the year in doubles for an 11-1 record. The pair were the Big South's No. 3 Flight Champions. Off the court, Steyn holds a 3.78 GPA in accounting and is a two-time Big South Presidential Honor Roll Selection and a five-time Dean's List member.

Gardner-Webb senior Evgeny Slesarev was named the 2010 Big South Men's Tennis Player of the Year, while Radford Head Coach Mike Anderson was recognized by his coaching peers as the 2010 Coach of the Year.

The 2010 Big South Championship gets underway Thursday with three matches at the Radford University Tennis Courts, starting at 9 a.m. The No. 4 seeded Liberty Flames face the No. 5 seeded Gardner-Webb Bulldogs in the first men's tennis match of the day at 10 a.m.
