McKay Named Co-Big South Golfer of the Week
McKay (Jacksonville, Fla.) shared the honor with Coastal Carolina's Dan Obremski, as both golfers excelled during the weeks of Feb. 28 through March 17.
McKay fired an even par 210 to finish fourth at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate on March 8-9. The even par total, his third-best 54-hole total this season, was aided by a five-under par 65 during his second round, the best 18-hole score of his rookie season.
Last week, McKay was one of seven golfers to finish in red numbers at the Rio Pinar Invitational. During the two-day event, which was hosted by UCF, McKay finished with a one-under par 215, as he carded a pair of even par rounds and a sub-par round during the second.
Obremski finished in the top three in his two recent appearances. The Coastal Carolina golfer tied for second at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational with an even par 216, including a tournament-low five-under par 67 during the second round. Obremski later tied for third at the General Hackler Championship with an even-par 216, helping the Chanticleers to a runner-up team finish in the event.
McKay and Obremski are the top two ranked golfers in the Big South Conference, as listed by the most recent Golfstat rankings (released on March 17). The weekly Golfstat ranking is the listing used by the NCAA to select at-large individuals into the NCAA Regional fields for postseason play in May.
McKay leads the league, as the rookie is maintaining a 72.79 stroke average and is currently ranked No. 69 as an individual by Golfstat. Obremski, who is listed at No. 94 by Golfstat, ranks just behind McKay with a 72.81 stroke average. McKay also leads Obremski with five Top 10 finishes, to Obremski's four Top 10 finishes.
This marks the second time McKay has received the weekly honor issued by the league. The freshman was also granted the accolade following Liberty's final competition of the fall season, when McKay finished tied for second with a 14-under par 202 at the Renaissance Invitational (Nov. 1 and 2).
McKay and the rest of the Flames will return to the golf links on April 2-3, when they travel to Wallace, N.C., to participate in the River Landing Intercollegiate.
The two-day, 54-hole event, which is hosted by UNC Wilmington at the River Landing Golf Club, will serve as Liberty's final tune-up before McKay and Obremski go head-to-head at the 2010 Big South Men's Golf Championships, April 19-21, in Ninety-Six, S.C.
