Preston Dembowiak was one of several Flames who found success in Liberty's match-play event against Southeastern over the weekend.

In a unique warm-up event prior to resuming the rest of their 2009-10 schedule, Liberty's men's golf team captured two match play wins over Southeastern during the weekend at an event hosted at River Hills Country Club in Valrico, Fla.

The heads-up event gave both squads a chance to refine their golf games prior to jumping back into full tournament action in early February.

On Saturday, the Flames finished the day with a 4.5 to 2.5 edge over the Fire. Liberty won four of the seven matches, spotlighted by an 8 and 6 victory by Robert Karlsson over Chris Burke.

Additional victors for the Flames on the opening day were Preston Dembowiak (4 and 3 over Matt Matsen), Chris Watters (6 and 4 over Raymond Walsh) and Jordan Frye (2 up against Evan McIntosh). Stephen Dooley rounded out Liberty's golfer who gained team points, as he halved his match with Drew Mathews.

Battling windy conditions that led to higher scores on Monday, Liberty was still able to maintain its edge over the NAIA program, downing Southeastern, 6.5 to 0.5.

The Flames won six out of seven matches, including a dominating run by Frye over McIntosh (7 and 6).

For Liberty, the event served as qualifying rounds for the team's upcoming spring schedule. Despite the match-play format, each golfer still played as though the event was stroke play.

Karlsson carded a four-under par 68 on Saturday and an even-par round of 72. Dembowiak (three-under par 69) and Watters (one-over par 73) spotlighted other individual scores for the Flames on Saturday, while Dooley (one-over par 73) and McKay (one-over par 73) battled the blustery day to highlight the second day's action.

The Flames will return the golf links on Feb. 8 and 9, when they travel back to the Sunshine State to participate in the Jacksonville Invitational.

The two-day, 54-hole event will give Liberty's golfers a chance to play on a PGA Tour course. The tournament is going to be held on the TPC Sawgrass Stadium Course in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., site of the THE PLAYERS Championship and the infamous par-3, No. 17 island green.
