Liberty Men Open With Sweep

The Liberty Flames men's tennis team started their 2010 campaign by sweeping its contest with Morgan State, 7-0, Friday, inside the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center.

The Flames (1-0) opened the first contest of 2010 for both teams, taking all three of the double match-ups. The freshmen pairing of Siim Tuus and Tristan Stayt defeated Kevion Charles and Eric Ward, 8-3, to put the No. 1 contest in the Liberty ledger, while Louis Steyn and Ben Wirth combined for an 8-2 Liberty win over Aaron Benjamin and Dmitry Cheklatyy in the No. 2 doubles spot. Giancarlo Lemmi and Chad Simpson completed the doubles sweep with an 8-1 victory over Dwayne Thomas and Richard King.

Liberty also captured all six singles contests, achieving a sweep in the opening match of the season. Stayt at No.1, Tuus at No. 2, Simpson at No. 3, Lemmi at No. 4, Steyn at No. 5 and Wirth at No.6 each won his singles match in straight sets. Simpson did not drop a game in winning his singles contest.

Liberty stays in Norfolk, Va., for a match Sunday against Old Dominion at the Folkes-Stevens Tennis Center. Match time is set for 9 a.m.
