Chris Mandell, Michael Ward and Darren Amoo were named to the VaSID All-State team.

Liberty forward Darren Amoo was selected to the VaSID All-State first team, while defenders Chris Mandell and Michael Ward were named to the all-state second team in voting conducted by the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). The all-state team honors the best Division I men's soccer players in the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Amoo, a redshirt sophomore from Accra, Ghana, was selected to the squad's first team after leading Liberty with 14 goals and 33 points this past fall. His goal total led the Big South Conference, while the forward finished second in the conference in points.

Both totals rank among the program's all-time single-season bests. Amoo's 2009 point total ties him for the fourth-best single-season ledger in school annals, while his goal tally ties him for fourth on the program's single-season goal list.

A first team All-Big South and ECAC All-Star selection, Amoo completed the season eighth in the country with .70 goals per game and 13th in the nation with 1.65 points per game. The forward was also named to the 2009 Big South All-Tournament team, as the Flames reached the championship game.

Meanwhile, both Mandell and Ward were members of a Liberty defense, which ranked seventh in the country in team goals-against average with a 0.53 per game average. Both seniors, the two defenders were selected as members of the 2009 All-Big South first team.

Mandell, a senior from Bowling Green, Va., and Ward, a senior from Seffner, Fla., also helped Liberty post a Big South-high 12 shutouts and rank sixth in the country in shutout percentage for the year (0.6). The Flames tied the school record this past fall for blankings, matching the total of the 1985 Liberty team.

Each defender served as a team captain for the 12-4-3 Flames, with each assisting on two goals during the season. The Flames outscored their opponents, 43-11, this fall, ranking fifth nationally in scoring offense.
