Flames Improve to No. 9 in Region

The Liberty men's cross country team is currently ranked No. 9 in the Southeast region.

The Liberty men's cross country squad, which has been ranked as high as sixth this season, is listed ninth in the Southeast Region this week, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

The Flames, ranked 10th last week, moved up a spot after finishing ninth at the NCAA Cross Country Southeast Regional on Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky. Liberty's Sam Chelanga won the event for the second consecutive year, crossing the line in 29:31.25, while Evans Kigen finished sixth overall with a time of 30:13.51.

The Flames are preceded in the Southeast Region by No. 1 William & Mary, No. 2 N.C. State, No. 3 Louisville, No. 4 Duke, No. 5 Virginia, No. 6 North Carolina, No. 7 Eastern Kentucky and No. 8 Virginia Tech.

Chelanga and Kigen will represent Liberty at Monday's NCAA Division I Cross Country National Championship in Terre Haute, Ind., concluding the 2009 cross country season. Race time is set for 12:08 p.m. and will be televised live on Versus.
