Chelanga Named Big South Runner of the Week
The redshirt junior from Nairobi, Kenya, finished second in the white race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind., on Saturday.
He clocked a time of 23:34.6 on the soggy 8K course, which was the second-best time out of 475 runners on the day, representing 20 nationally-ranked teams. Chelanga led the entire way, before Stanford's Chris Derrick passed him on the final straightaway for the win.
Chelanga, the 2008 NCAA national cross country runner-up, is gearing up for the Big South Championship, which will be held on Oct. 31 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Last season, Chelanga was the Big South individual champion, helping the Liberty men's team win its fourth straight conference title.
