Liberty redshirt junior Sam Chelanga, who led for most of the NCAA Pre-Nationals men's 8K white race Saturday morning, ended up in second place. Stanford's Chris Derrick sprinted ahead of Chelanga on the final straightaway to take the win at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute, Ind. Chelanga crossed the finish line with a time of 23:34.6, seven seconds behind Derrick, and the second-fastest overall time of the day's races.

As a team, the Flames finished 29th in a field of 35 teams, which included 10 squads ranked in the top 30 in the country. Liberty ended up with 718 team points. No. 1 Stanford won the event with two top-five finishers and 47 points.

After Chelanga, Evans Kigen clocked a time of 24:38.2, good for a 57th-place finish. Jake Reed was the next Flame to cross the finish line with a time of 26:45.4 (215th place), followed closely by Will Reeves in 221st place (26:51.6) and David Ricksecker in 223rd place (27:02.3). Isaac Wendland and Mark Hopely finished 225th and 226th, respectively, clocking times of 27:07.9 and 27:08.2.

On the women's side, the Lady Flames finished 33rd out of a 37-team field, which included eight Top-30 squads. Liberty's point total was 867. Leading the way was Colorado, with 94 points.

Dacia Bushman fared the best for the Lady Flames, finishing 111th out of 249 runners with a time of 22:12.2 in the 6K. Jennifer Klugh was the next Liberty finisher, coming in 142nd with a time of 22:33.4, followed by Hailey Neal in 189th place (23:08.8). Rod'Esther Castor and Betel Yosef crossed the line together in 23:30, finishing 212th and 213th, respectively. Colorado's Jenny Barringer was the overall winner, clocking a time of 19:50.9, nearly 30 seconds ahead of the next finisher.

The Flames and Lady Flames are back in action Oct. 31, competing in the Big South Championship in Winston-Salem, N.C. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10:30 a.m.
