Liberty Men Win XC Event with Perfect Score

The Liberty men's cross country squad won the Hagan Stone Park Classic, taking the first six slots among collegiate athletes in the 8K event, Saturday morning, in Greensboro, N.C.

Meanwhile, the Liberty women's squad finished second, three points behind Duke.

Sam Chelanga, last year's NCAA Championship runner-up, crossed the finish line first with a time of 24:45 in his season debut. Fellow Liberty junior, Evans Kigen, finished second with a time of 25:08. David Ricksecker (26:27), Will Reeves (26:28), Jake Reed (26:44), Mark Hopely (26:50) and Isaac Wendland (26:56), finished fourth through eighth overall, respectively. The next school represented was King College, as Daniel Hamilton finished ninth with a time of 26:57.

Also finishing among the top 20 for Liberty were Spencer Jackson (13th, 27:17), Ryan Cox (14th, 27:26) and Andrew Rigler (17th, 27:34).

On the women's side, Dacia Bushman claimed the best Liberty finish, clocking an 18:05 time to place fifth overall and second among collegiate athletes in the 5K event. She was joined in the top 10 by Hailey Neal, who finished 10th with a time of 18:51.

The next Liberty finisher was Jennifer Klugh, placing 11th in 18:52. The fourth and fifth Liberty finishers were freshmen, in Khristina Kanagy (13th, 19:13) and Betel Yosef (15th, 19:15). Rounding out the Lady Flames in the top 20 were Rod'Esther Castor, who finished 16th with a 19:22 time, and Denise Troyer, who claimed 20th overall with a time of 19:29.

The Flames and Lady Flames are back in action Oct. 17, when both squads compete in the NCAA Pre-Nationals in Terre Haute, Ind. The meet is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
